Since the 21st century, increasingly more attention has been paid to the health of eyes. The increasing incidence of eye diseases, such as cataract, myopia, diabetic retinopathy and maculopathy, has become a worldwide problem.
According to the latest research report of World Health Organization :
1.Cataract is the leading cause of blindness in the world. An estimated 35% of the blindness and 25% of the moderate and severe visual impairment worldwide result from the untreated cataracts in time.
2.Nowadays, about 1.4 billion people worldwide suffer from myopia. Among them, the proportion of myopia reaches 47% in China, which is the highest in the world, as in the United States (42%), Japan (46%) and Singapore (59%).
3.The prevalence of diabetic retinopathy is 40.3% and 86% in patients with type 2 and type 1 diabetes mellitus, respectively, and retinopathy that threatens vision accounts for 8% and 42%, respectively.
4.Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) blindness accounts for 8.7% of global blindness. There are approximately 30 million AMD patients worldwide, and about 500,000 people are blinded due to AMD annually.
